Educator Externship In Construction Program

Recognizing that teachers have a profound impact on the education
and career pathways for their students, the Foundation developed a
week-long summer experience to show educators the varied and rewarding
construction careers available to their students. Highlights from the week
included learning about apprenticeship programs, industry certifications, and
the UW Construction Management degree; touring exciting construction
projects and school programs; engaging with industry experts; exploring
cutting-edge technology used in construction; networking with current
professionals; and receiving lesson plans to bring back to school. All
participating educators received STEM clock hours from OSPI.
“The Educator Externship was an engaging week,” said Terry Derrig,
Apprenticeships/Internships/ Work Site Learning Coordinator for the Renton
School District. “It provided us with talking points and lesson plans for our
students and we learned about the skills needed in construction and how they
can lead to successful pathways in the industry.”
